We offer the Anointing of the Sick every month on the First Saturday at the Noon Mass to those “whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age.” The sacrament may be repeated if the sick person recovers...and then falls ill again or if the person’s condition becomes more serious in the same illness. You should be anointed before surgery, the elderly may be anointed even if they do not have a serious illness. You may be anointed for a chronic illness like, arthritis, COPD, as well as an acute illness like cancer or pneumonia. Mental or emotional illness in many cases is considered serious as well and merits the sacrament. A common cold or even the flu does not warrant the Anointing. Most people probably should not receive it every month but that is your judgment to make.
